Dentistry is a branch of science that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and disorders of gums, teeth, mouth and jaw. Oral health also influences the entire body health. Oral health refers to the health of the gums, teeth, and the entire oral-facial system that helps us to speak, chew and smile. Most common diseases that affect our oral health are cavities (tooth decay), oral cancer, gum (periodontal) disease and herpes. Oral diseases can be caused by consumption of tobacco, alcohol, excess sugar and sweets, poor oral hygiene etc. Oral health can be maintained by following few basics like brushing the teeth twice a day, floss between the teeth daily, maintain oral hygiene and visiting the dentist at least once in a year if you have dentures. The foods to be taken to strengthen the teeth are calcium rich food like yogurt, cheese, low-fat or fat-free milk, fortified soymilk, tofu, almonds, canned salmon, green leafy vegetables etc.
